By Ken MaxfieldOpened in 1948, Camp Getaway was an initiative of Rotary Bendigo in response to the need for a youth camp in the region. Today, the camp is a wonderful respite that caters for people of all abilities and mobility. It is a meeting place for support groups, and offers those who need it most a sanctuary away from their daily struggles. Whilst disability and related support groups have priority for booking dates, Camp Getaway welcomes bookings for family groups, church groups, clubs, special functions, business meetings and recreational groups.Situated at Axedale, twenty kilometres east of Bendigo, the camp has myriad activities available, as well as fantastic tourist attractions within close proximity. It can accommodate up to 72 campers in three cabins each containing two twin bedrooms with ensuite; and two dormitories, each with 28-30 beds. Other main buildings include recreation and dining halls/lounge catering for up to 80-90 diners. M

By Deb Sloggett, Foundation Chair, International Committee – Rotary Club of Keilor EastBeing disabled in Cambodia is hard. It is thought that 60% of disabled people live under the country’s poverty line, and most live in rural areas where access to support is non-existent or cost-prohibitive. Children with disability don’t attend school, as there is no suitable infrastructure. Significantly, most families are unaware of any support that they could access. However, there is an NGO reaching out to change this.Safe Haven, a therapeutic and medical outreach centre (NGO), is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Its mission is to create lasting change in the lives of children with disabilities and medical issues. The staff members provide holistic and culturally appropriate support suitable for the individual child and family. This program is so good that word of mouth is one of the main referral arms. Scott wanted paid work but because he had an intellectual disability, applying for jobs online as part of a competitive interviewing process didn’t work well for him. He had been told by Disability Services that the best place for him to work would be a segregated workshop with low wages and no chance of career advancement. Scott, his family and the people who knew him well, felt he could do better than this, so they reached out to Belonging Matters. The people at Belonging Matters took the time to understand Scott, as a person. They crafted a work profile based on his strengths, talents and preferred working environments. On seeing Scott’s profile, one of the people at Belonging Matters network advised that there was a business that was looking for these skills. As a result, Scott was able to secure a job offering 10 hours work a week at a printing company where he became a valuable and much-loved part of the team. Scott’s self-esteem ro
