March is Rotary Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month, so what better time to launch the new water reticulation system at the Aladura Primary School in Buedu, Sierrra Leone, than March! The Sierra Leone Water Storage and Reticulation project, a project of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie and the Rotary Club of Bo, Sierra Leone, was funded with proceeds from the Boroondara Farmers Market supported by generous grants from Rotary Balwyn and the Australian Government through Australia Aid.The construction of the water tower, deepening of the well, installation of the solar powered pump, installation of the wash troughs at the main building and the new toilet blocks, and all plumbing is now completed. For added security, solar powered lighting has been installed at the water tower, and around the wash troughs, in a village where street lighting is virtually non-existent. The opening ceremony, involving a marching band, government representatives, and village dignatories, and very importantly the children of Buedu, is set for Saturday March 28th. Congratulations to the project team from across two continents, led by Glenferrie Rotarian Amelia Anderson and Bo Rotarian PP Taplima Muana.
In a village with little public lighting, the new solar-powered lights at the Aladura Primary School will shine as a beacon in the village. Newly installed security cages will protect the plumbing from thieves when the school is unattended. The school is planning to establish a 'Neighbours Begone!" fence, comprised of local hedging plants provided by the Sierra Leone Government, as added security. Bringing water, lighting the schoolgrounds, taking care of the environment and preparing for the future. Because children are the future.
