Do you believe that you can make a difference in the campaign to control the spread of malaria?  The position of District 9800 RAM Supervisor has been vacant for some time and RAM Southern Region is keen to hear from an interested party to assume this position on behalf of District 9800.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease.  Recent statistics from the latest WHO (World Health Organisation) Report state that the number of cases worldwide in 2020 was 241million: (14 million more cases compared to the year before). The number of deaths from malaria was 627,000: an increase of at least 69,000 from 2019, and it is estimated that two thirds of the deaths were children under 5. A large number of these additional deaths were linked to disruptions in the provision of malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment due to the COVID pandemic.

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) Australia is a volunteer-run organization, working to eliminate malaria. It exists in all Rotary districts in Australia and is a RAWCS “activity”.  RAM supports projects that aim to control and ultimately eliminate malaria. It works with government health programs in partner countries (PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and East and West Timor) and follows the recommended WHO guidelines on the best strategies for control and elimination. RAM works closely with the Ministry of Health authorities in each of the countries and complements the work of other malaria organisations, most notably the World Health Organisation and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Most of the projects supported by RAM are in the area of vector control; that is, reducing the mosquito population and the opportunity for mosquitos to bite humans and thus spread the malaria parasite. Treated bed nets and spraying still remain the best methods of vector control.

The potential candidate does not need to be an expert on malaria to take on the District 9800 RAM Supervisor role, as orientation and mentoring will be provided.

Expressions of Interest in the position should be emailed to the Southern Region RAM Supervisor PP Gloria Hargreaves: email:  ram.southern@rawcs.org.au or mob: 0419 140 090 who will be happy to provide any additional information you require.
