Protocol Matters – Enhancing Rotary’s Image
Type: StoryPublished: Jun 19, 2021In many business circles today, there has been quite a shift from the formal behaviours of the past to a far more casual approach to the way we address one another, conduct meetings and even dress. COVID has further added to this with so many people working from home and video conferencing with work colleagues. These changes have also carried over into Rotary. While formality varies from club to club, Rotary has also adapted to a rapidly changing, fast-paced, technology driven world where formality and rules have softened. Even so, protocol and manners still matter. And while each club will determine its own culture and conduct, it is still important to ensure that Rotary’s image is enhanced in the public eye and is attractive to new members, visiting Rotarians, guest speakers and other guests. Some simple, but important courtesies are important considerations and help to ensure meetings are well run and respectful. Guest speakers for example, should

District Governor Nominee Amanda Wendt sets her sights on the next generation
Type: StoryPublished: Jun 06, 2021By Tricia ReardonPerhaps it was a sliding doors moment when Amanda, as an elite track athlete in Brisbane in 2007/8 met a young American Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and agreed to accompany him to several Rotary events prior his return to California. She’d never heard of Rotary up to that point. Fast-forward to 2018 and Amanda, as a member of the Rotary International Communications Committee, was invited by RI President Barry Rassin to address International Assembly in San Diego on how to attract, engage and activate millennials. Seated in the front row was the American Ambassadorial Scholar who had first introduced her to Rotary. But that is exactly what happens in Rotary … people connect and build life-long friendships. And it is this that Amanda has enjoyed so much about her Rotary journey. While she only joined in 2010 – not a long time some would consider given what’s ahead for her in 2022-23 – Amanda has amassed an incredible depth of experiences at club, district and eve

Type: StoryPublished: Oct 21, 2021Around the District with DG DaleHi Rotarians and friends of Rotary,I am sure you are all looking forward to the easing of restrictions and all the freedoms that this will bring. I am still located in Ballarat and have been enjoying running around Lake Wendouree while participating in the End Polio Walk throughout October. The fundraising continues for this very worthy cause and if you would like to donate, the link is here:https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/fundraiser/dalehoy/walk-with-us I was able to visit Prahran, Flemington Kensington, Caroline Springs, Chadstone/East Malvern, Caulfield, Keilor East, Hawthorn and Essendon North and two clubs being Yarraville and Kew who both had a special 'Lift the Lid' Hat event. You will see the photo of Kew's Hat event. I have appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the activities undertaken by clubs and identifying ways District resources can support the clubs to increase club’s community impact and reach

Speaker Rob McGuirk
Type: PagePublished: Aug 13, 2018Speaker Rob McGuirk End Trachoma 2020 Rob McGuirk from Rotary Melbourne spoke at Rotary Hawthorn recently regarding the 'End Trachoma 2020' project. Rob gave an excellent and interesting address. Rotary’s 2017-18 International President, Australia’s Ian Riseley, wants a trachoma-free Australia by 2021, Rotary’s 100th year in Australia. Australia is the world's only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. Contact: Rob McGuirk or Kerry Kornhauser 0418 390 334 What is Trachoma? We used to call trachoma sandy blight (the eyes feel gritty, as if full of sand). Evidently the world’s prime cause of infectious blindness, it is due to the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. We heard from guest speaker Robert McGuirk that it leads to eyel

West Footscray Rotary
Type: StoryPublished: Jan 21, 2021By Henry DruryIn 1839 a punt was the crossing from Melbourne Town to the fledgling village of Saltwater on the western bank of the Maribyrnong, then known as the Saltwater River. In 1848 the locality took the name Foots Cray after the village on the river Cray in south-east London (which resonates somewhat with Franco Cozzo’s “Foot-is-cray” memorable 1980s TV ads). In 1859, the municipality of Footscray was officially proclaimed and became a working-class suburb with varied industries including quarrying, and particularly the noxious industries of slaughtering, rendering for tallow, tanneries, wool scouring and, as some would suggest, the Bulldogs football team. The noxious industry has gone, the football team prospers and the Rotary Club of West Footscray, chartered on 23 January 1978, now proudly serves a younger, vibrant and ethnically varied community in a rapidly regen
