245 Entrants walked 19,000kms to raise $111,130!To help stop paralytic poliomyelitis you can donate at Walk With Us to End Polio Thank you to those who walked to raise funds and supported the goal to end Poliomyelitis, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens the children of the world today. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary worldwide has helped to reduce Polio cases from an average of 1000 cases per day in 1987 to a total of only 140 cases in 2020, a 99.9% reduction. It is crucial to eliminate Polio from Afghanistan and Pakistan, the last two countries where it remains endemic. We must also keep all other countries Polio-free. If eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, Polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year.Rotary and its partners are committed to eliminating Poliomyelitis completely from the world. Smallpox is the only other disease ever completely eradicated. F

World Polio Day 2020Â
Type: Story
Published: Oct 16, 2020
Whilst COVID-19 is front and centre of everyone’s minds, we must not forget Rotary’s focus on eradicating polio. We are so close! World Polio Day is 24th October, and I encourage you to participate in the virtual event being held at Parliament House next Wednesday, 21st October. Polio eradication efforts have already made a major positive impact on our world. Since 1988, nearly 3 billion children have been immunized against polio, and nearly 19 million people are walking who would otherwise have been paralysed. Rotary has contributed more than $2.1 billion to global polio eradication efforts, and in 2019, there were 176 cases of wild poliovirus confined to just two countries – Pakistan & Afghanistan. It is so important we maintain the momentum on both eradication and fundraising until we see the finality of this insidious virus.Last Sunday was the first Rotary in Harmony event, focusing on Classical music. Over 200 people registered for the event with over 180 people join

Healthy Clubs

Now that we are in ‘handover mode’ for the new Rotary year, it is an ideal time to work with the incoming leadership team to check on the health of your club. The My Rotary website has a great tool that you can use called Rotary Club Health Check. This interactive guide asks you to review elements of your club such as the club experience, service and socials, members, public image, and business and operations. You can then decide which areas need the most attention. Taking a proactive approach to your club’s health will ensure you maintain a vibrant and active club for your members, which in turn will help to retain members and attract new ones. The Rotary Club Health Check is a whole-of-club exercise, the results from which can be shared with all members with a plan developed together. If you haven’t already done so, it is not too late to register for the final days of the Rotary 2021 Virtual Convention. There are many wonderful sessions in which to participate with truly grea

But, the credo perfectly sums up the man himself in his Rotary life and prior career.Rowan is a Member and Past President of the Rotary Club of North Balwyn, is currently District 9800 Club Service Chair and a previous RAWCS Chair and International Service Chair. His CV is as long as your arm, but it has unmistakably influenced his Rotary work today. Initially a Trinity Grammar student, Rowan later undertook an MBA as a mature-age student at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He spent 15 years living and working outside Australia, in the fields of business development, international planning and marketing. He guided new businesses in Papua New Guinea; was an Australian Trade Commissioner in Indonesia; commenced a management consulting practice in Jakarta; conducted executive search assignments in Japan; and, helped service industry development through the UN in Paki

A Great Morning Tea…thank you to everyone!
Type: Story
Published: Jun 19, 2021
The last Morning Tea with the DG for the Rotary year was on Saturday and I would like to thank all those who helped put it together, as well as the 130 participants on the day. We had a lot of fun, were entertained by great performers and heard from fantastic speakers. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Morning Teas over the year – seeing so many Rotarians from the District and other Districts join us online has been a real privilege for me.Presentations from Dorothy Gilmour on Rotary Safe Families, Dr Suresh Marcandon on Australian Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid and Fabienne Nichola on the Environmental and Sustainability projects in the District were exceptional and a wonderful reminder of Rotary’s incredible impact. Partnering with other organisations is also something Rotary does so well and Terry McAleenan’s presentation on The Fathering Project struck a chord with many. I encourage Rotary clubs to reach out to Terry and see how you can work together on this exciting and worthwh

This October, Walk With Us for those who can’t

Global virus pandemics are not new. Before vaccines were developed for polio in the 1950s, parents were gripped by terror: over 1,000 children were dying or being paralysed each day.Alongside Past RI Presidents, Directors and Rotarians from across Australia and New Zealand you are invited to join a challenge this year to honour the life of Past RI President, Sir Clem Renouf, Rotary’s original Polio campaigner. What’s the challenge? Go for a walk!(actually, a walk, a run or a roll—your choice)You can do this! Even those of us in lockdown can do this. So, what’s involved?Register your target (say 10km, 20km, 50km or whatever distance suits) during the month of OctoberGet friends, family, colleagues and local businesses to sponsor youRecord your activity, monitor the leader boards, track your results. What will you achieve?Save children now in polio hotpots like Pakistan and AfghanistanHelp develop innovative new vaccination programsHelp plan the polio endgame, including repurposing the p
