If you personalise the Rotary slogan “Service above Self” Past District Governor (PDG) John and Fran Wigley provide a perfect example. They have both been involved in Rotary for close to four decades and active in a wide range of projects and activities across District 9800 over 37 years.Photo: Fran and PDG John Wigley, DG Dale and Maureen Hoy John and Fran's Rotary journey started when John was invited to join the newly chartered Brighton North club in 1985, becoming actively involved from early days in the club serving on various committees. John and Fran’s involvement in the wider Rotary community saw them attend their first World Rotary Convention, held in Melbourne in 1993, where they manned the Welcome Desk and hosted visitors to dinner during the convention. Formed in 2017, the Timor Rotary Consortium is a collaboration of six District 9800 Rotary Clubs to implement a Global Grant for a Water and Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) Project in the Baguia region of Timor Leste with the Rotary Club of Dili Lafaek acting as International Host.The participating Rotary clubs were: Camberwell, Chadstone East Malvern, Hawthorn, Glenferrie, Malvern and Prahran, who together raised $72,000, which, with the addition of a Global Grant, District Grant and individual donations, grew to a total of $140,000. The project was to construct four school toilets and thirty-two 5,500-litre water tanks, including training for local villagers in construction techniques and the use of hand and power tools. Over two years, four Rotary volunteer teams visited project sites. Mike's talk outlines the rationale for each expedition and reviews their parallels and contrasts while highlighting some of the incredible events which occurred during these treks. About the Speaker: Mike is from Wollongong. He came to Melbourne to undertake an MSc at Monash University at age 20. After a few short years in Melbourne, Mike had a wife (Carol), 4 kids and a mortgage. He had a long career in the IT industry based mainly in Melbourne but with re-locations to Sydney, Perth and Boyne Island in Central Queensland.
