This Committee was formed in early 2019 with the key purpose of developing greater awareness of environmental sustainability solutions to restore ecosystems and contribute to a healthy environment. The committee supports clubs to identify new environmental sustainability projects and/or enhance existing ones.[The orange-bellied parrot is on the brink of extinction with only 60 birds in existence.] With the support of the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), the Committee has access to a range of resources to assist clubs to achieve successful projects in this area. A World Environment Day Handbook can be downloaded at https://www.esrag.org/esrag-unep-handbook. The handbook includes a selection of 11 green themes for club activities. Why get involved?Survey responses from Rotarians, Rotaractors and Alumni members showed the environment is one of the major concerns and in the top 3 causes that members wish to address. Peter Grose, Book 1 A Very Rude Awakening: the night the Japanese midget subs came to Sydney Harbour (Allen & Unwin, Sydney, 2007) *VIA ZOOM* On the night of 31 May 1942 Sydney was doing what it does best: partying. The theatres, restaurants, dance halls, illegal gambling dens, clubs and brothels offered plenty of choice to roistering sailors, soldiers and airmen on leave in a welcoming and glamorous city. The war seemed far away. Newspapers devoted more pages to horseracing than to Hitler. That Sunday night the party came to a shattering halt when three Japanese midget submarines crept into the harbour, past eight electronic indicator loops, six patrolling Royal Australian Navy ships, and past an incomplete anti-submarine net stretched across the inner harbour entrance. Their arrival triggered a night

By John GrangerThis august publication and humble writer would never stoop to crass commercial promotion, but a recent trip to Castlemaine started a process.Travelling from Melbourne CBD to Castlemaine by train takes less than two hours. And, seriously, Castlemaine is a delight! The ‘Goldfields’ area bespeaks the vibrant history of Victoria’s early development. There are nearby townships such as Chewton and its miners’ cottages, sometimes with wisps of chimney smoke. Also, there are many artefacts from that fabulous era that made Victoria and Melbourne a financial powerhouse in the 1880s. Castlemaine embraces its past … there’s the Theatre Royal where the controversial dancer Lola Montez once appeared, the local railway station hosting steam train trips to historical Maldon and the historical shopfront buildings. Then there are the 19th century coffee houses, which have given way to boutique eating venues, artistic pursuits, weekend craft and produce markets – and yes, even fr

Many people ask me “What was the highlight of your year”? There have been many highlights and personal achievements but for both Maureen and I working with Rotarians and Rotary Clubs and witnessing the quality of projects and their impact on the community has been the most rewarding. Here is a snapshot of our year. A review of the 2021/22 Rotary year cannot ignore the impact of COVID. Having said that over the last twelve months, and despite COVID, so much has been achieved by Rotarians in the 64 clubs in District 9800. At District level highlights include the development of a scalable Rotary International student mentoring platform. I was humbled to receive an award from Zondwa Mandela on behalf of the Mandela Foundation at the launch of Mentor Match and I look forward to continuing to support and grow this initiative. Rotary Central Melbourne, supported by District 9800 and Mentor Match were successful against 65 other applications for a Victorian G
