The Journey for Healthy Lives in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Type: Story
Published: Apr 18, 2021
By Deb Sloggett, Foundation Chair, International Committee – Rotary Club of Keilor EastBeing disabled in Cambodia is hard. It is thought that 60% of disabled people live under the country’s poverty line, and most live in rural areas where access to support is non-existent or cost-prohibitive. Children with disability don’t attend school, as there is no suitable infrastructure. Significantly, most families are unaware of any support that they could access. However, there is an NGO reaching out to change this.Safe Haven, a therapeutic and medical outreach centre (NGO), is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Its mission is to create lasting change in the lives of children with disabilities and medical issues. The staff members provide holistic and culturally appropriate support suitable for the individual child and family. This program is so good that word of mouth is one of the main referral arms. Keilor East Rotarians Debra Sloggett and Helen Penna were in Cambodia in July and shared their leadership and club experiences with the Rotaractors in Siem Reap. “We really appreciate your valuable time and experience sharing with us so that we can make our club more sustainable and impactful”, is how Tangly Ton, the President of the Rotaract Club of Siem Reap described the mentorship session. Debra and Helen participated in several community service activities, all led and managed by the Rotaractors as they work to leave a sustainable impact in their communities. Last year Rotary Keilor East led two District International Grants supported by the Rotary Foundation, which saw the installation of 4 water filtration systems and 11 toilets in rural high schools. Deb and Helen had the opportunity of meeting with the students and teachers who are the beneficiaries of these Grants, as they assessed the significant impact of clean

What a Mission! Safe drinking water for Cambodian Schools
Type: Story
Published: Dec 18, 2021
As an initial project, “Project W, Water for Education” has partnered with Rotary Keilor East, Rotary Passport Melbourne (RPM), Disaster Aid Australia, and Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST), an NGO in Siem Reap, to install Australian-made SkyHydrant filtration systems in four rural schools. At an average cost of $5,000 per school (or around $0.35 per year), clean water can be provided to the whole school population. More than half of the 90 schools in the Siem Reap area do not have access to clean drinking water which means that students who are at school all day are either not drinking water or are buying bottled drinks which contributes to the problem of single-use plastic waste in Cambodia where recycling is not in operation.Project W – Water for Education is focused on providing safe drinking water to rural schools in Siem Reap province, Cambodia. The project will see 40,000 rural students and teachers, as well as 20,000 families livin

Rotary & NGO provide Clean Water & Toilets in Cambodia
Type: Story
Published: Sep 05, 2021
Rotary Central Melbourne, in partnership with Cambodia Clean Water and Toilet Project Ltd (CCWT), has successfully completed a water and sanitation project in Kok Tnoth village (close to the temples of Angkor Wat).In addition to providing some food relief, a team of local people, managed remotely from Australia, installed 12 clean water bores and 12 toilet/washrooms on time and on budget. COVID has severely affected tourism to Siem Reap and the area around Angkor Wat. Consequently this has impacted the employment and sources of income of many people in villages such as Kok Tnoth. The pandemic has also impacted the implementation and management of much-needed projects in the communities. However, in Kok Tnoth, March 2020, the villagers themselves formed the team to construct toilets and dig the wells and the project continued under the supervision of one villager who is fluent in English. The project was also very fortuna

He also happens to be President of Rotary Battambang.Ptea Teuk Dong runs two primary schools and is also setting up an agricultural school to encourage local farmers to diversify their crops.During a three-day visit to Battambang in January 2019, I spent a lot of time with Rith discussing and developing a project to convert an existing historical Cambodian residence close to tourism routes into a restaurant / coffee shop / art-craft gallery / farmers market, largely as a practical training centre for potential hospitality workers, but also with an eye to financial self-sufficiency. The idea is to give trainees enough technical and business skills to enter the hospitality / tourism industry directly, rather than being employed, and even exploited by the wealthy end of town. Through our discussions, I lear

Sustainable food sources and clean water in Cambodian village
Type: Story
Published: May 30, 2022
COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on tourism in Cambodia. The normally crowded tourist area around Siem Reap is a ghost town. Due to this lack of tourism-related work, there was a similar effect on the lives of families in Kok Tnoth, a village in northern Cambodia. Australian, Darrel Steer, a member of Rotary Passport Club of Melbourne, lives in Cambodia and has installed 450 toilets, and 150 clean water bores in Kok Tnoth village and during COVID was supporting village families with rice, cooking oil, seed and soap. A project of Brighton North Rotary costing $16,500; supported by a District Foundation Grant and by the World of Difference Committee was to encourage village farmers in the village of Kok Tnoth to utilise their land between rice crops and plant fast-growing vegetables; with water pumped from water bores. The crops supplemented the food needs of the community with the excess sold at local markets providing income for the villagers

Volunteering tourism experience in Cambodia
Type: Story
Published: Aug 19, 2023
Cambodia’s Siem Reap is charming, culturally exquisite, and is home to the ancient wonder of Angkor Wat. In this impoverished country tourism is Siem Reap’s lifeline and COVID severed it. It would be my great delight if you would consider joining me as I lead my 14th tour on behalf of Rotary in support of humanitarian sustainable projects which are identified and championed by local Khmers. The 12-day tour starts on Monday 15th January 2024 and the cost including all hotels, meals, insurance, entry fees, transport, and other land costs is $1499.00 excluding flights. We will enjoy wonderful cultural and historical experiences, volunteering and supporting remote villages with water and sanitation projects, and school education/infrastructure needs as identified by local teachers, commune leaders, and the district governors. All World of Difference projects are locally identified, and community relation
