The Portsea Camp has been providing charity camps for 9 to 12 year olds for over 60 years having commenced in 1947 as the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Camp. Whilst the Portsea camp staff undertakes the overall program and camp management, over 300 volunteers each year attend camps and ensure that over 1,200 young children, many of whom are disadvantaged and have special needs receive benefit from the unique opportunity. Nominated and sponsored children travel from all parts of Victoria to experience ‘a beach holiday of a lifetime’. The cost of the camp is kept as low as possible, with local communities and service clubs, including Rotary, a major supporter providing funds and volunteer labour during the annual Rotary Working Bee in October.
