The annual Big Camps held each January at Lord Somers Camp are the core programs of the not-for-profit youth organisation, Lord Somers Camp and Power House.
The camps are for a period of one week for the boys and one week for the girls.
The purpose of the Annual Camps is to bring together young people from across the entire spectrum of society and involve them in a structured program that will challenge them to achieve their very best. The week of rather unique experiences is also filled with fun and entertainment for all those who participate.
The program run at the camps enjoy are very strong reputation for developing teamwork, self-confidence, tolerance and the leadership skills of the participants. The structure of the program has continually has evolved over the past 70 years. The program is sports and activity based but carefully designed to ensure that all participants may excel in some area of endeavour.

The participants aged 16 to 18 years are deliberately drawn from a wide range of backgrounds. Whilst in the past 50% of the boys were apprentices, these days most are nominated by their school. A great variety of schools, both private and government, are involved, mainly from Victoria but also including some from other states. To ensure the diversity of the participants a maximum of 4 students per school per camp is set.
The benefits gained from the program are many and varied. It might to one person reveal a potential that they never thought they could achieve, to another an awareness of leadership qualities, to another a sense of self-worth and to another a better understanding of how to relate to others. Every participant returns with increased self confidence and teamwork skills.
Cost to clubs is usually around $450 per student. Information kits along with application forms will be mailed to New Generation Chairpersons in July, with applications closing in September.
