The malaria parasite is carried by the Anopheles mosquito which is a tough adversary.
Much funding worldwide has been provided for research into the development of vaccines and the establishment of malaria control programmes.
One of the best ways of preventing malaria is to avoid coming in contact with mosquitoes. This can be achieved by sleeping under a treated mosquito net. Treated bed nets have been shown to be over 70% effective in reducing the incidence of malaria in those areas in which they are able to be used.
The generosity of individual clubs across Australia (as well as districts and individuals) in support of RAM’s treated bed net programme has made a huge difference to the lives of so many people. Nets do save lives and reduce suffering.
Substantial funding has been received from The Rotary Foundation and AusAid, and more recently from the Global Fund aimed at significantly reducing if not eradicating malaria in the Solomon Islands over time.
Recently the Global Fund has announced a substantial malaria funding grant has been approved for Papua New Guinea. It is anticipated that a significant lead time will be necessary to get the protocols and logistics in place before the delivery of nets is fully operational. It will be quite some time before any real impact is felt where it matters – at the village level.
