Ending Polio Worldwide
Did you know that since 1985, the number of cases of Polio around the world has been reduced by 99%?
Are you old enough to know people who had polio in Australia?
If not, chances are you have noticed the difference that Rotarians around the world have made in conjunction with the national ministries of health, UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention; and with the current effort to completely eradicate the disease from the planet with the grateful support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of $US555 million, our task is nearly complete.
But it does not end until the last case is removed. Only then will the possibility of reinfection be removed and the huge cost to society of maintaining immunisation programs around the world can be avoided.
For over 3 decades, this has been the number one project for Rotarians worldwide including our district, involving donations, volunteers, research and more.
With your help, we can make polio a disease of the past!
