Friends R 4 - Research into better cancer treatments and their side effects
Friends-R-4 is a community initiative established in 2008 by Dr. Ronnie Goldberg OAM and the Rotary Club of Williamstown.
After several of Ronnie's friends and acquaintances had been diagnosed with various blood, bone marrow and skin cancers - lymphoma, leukaemia, multiple myeloma and melanoma - Ronnie decided to set up Friends-R-4 as a way to fight these cancers.
Friends-R-4 aims to raise funds in order to
- provide funding for urgent medical research
- purchase desperately required equipment at local institutions and centres
- provide assistance to cancer sufferers and their families and help promote the prevention and awareness of skin cancer.
Since being founded in 2008 Friends-R-4 has
- funded two research projects on blood cancers - leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Already, there has been a breakthrough which will ultimately result in earlier, targeted treatment with planning progressing for a further research project at The Royal Childrens Hospital involving children and cancer.
- purchased urgently needed medical equipment for The Royal Childrens Hospital
- under-taken The Yellow Brick Road Project involving a complete $250.000 refurbishment of Ronald MacDonald House adjacent to the Royal Childrens Hospital which is a comfort house for sick children and their families
- established A $2.3 million Richard Pratt Prostate Cancer Research Fellowship (valued at $100,000.00) which will be an annual appointment to a promising researcher in the field of Prostate Cancer.
