Thanks to the support of many D9800 clubs, Rotary Camp Getaway continues to be an exciting project that is now closer to its aim of providing a quality recreational camp experience people of all abilities.
Thousands of voluntary hours have already gone into redeveloping the site from the former basis of old army huts, to the self contained units with full disabled facilities, modern dormitories and the many improvements now available to people of all abilities.. During the year there has been significant involvement of Rotarians from many clubs from around Victoria who have undertaken significant working bees at Rotary Camp Getaway.
Stage One consists of three units, each incorporating two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The units also incorporate a single sitting room and small external veranda. The bathrooms have been specifically designed and constructed to cater for campers with special needs. The modern 28 bed dormitory is a far cry form the original WW2 style accommodation. Also ramp access to the dining and recreation hall has been constructed, along with many, wide, accessible paths.
Bookings have increased during the year with disability organizations arranging several camps. Other community groups have been the Young Stroke Survivors Group, Salvation Army Young Mums group, etc. D9800 usage has also increased with the RAWCS mini-conference and Youth Exchange residential programs being held on site again. It is hoped that other traditional D9800 activities can be successfully transferred to this, our own ‘Rotary asset’.
