Ride to Conquer Cancer

The Ride to Conquer Cancer needs volunteers for its inaugural Ride in Victoria.

It’s a two-day event on October 27/28 and volunteers are needed to help at the opening ceremonies, overnight camp and finish line stages to support the participants. Volunteer positions are based on a 4-6 hour shift and are flexible for times. You don’t need to be a cyclist, just kind of heart.

Crew are also needed. If you can’t ride but would still like to be a part of the weekend event, being a crew member is the perfect way to help. There’s a $50 registration fee that goes straight to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and you get hot showers, hot food and a cosy tent for Saturday night.

All money raised by the riders and crew goes directly into cancer research programs at Peter Mac. To find out how you can help call 1300 00 7433 or visit www.conquercancer.org.au

Robin de Crespigny - The People Smuggler - Rotary Club of St Kilda

Robin de Crespigny is a Sydney film-maker, producer, director, writer and a former Directing Lecturer at the Australian Film, Television & Radio School.
Her book ‘The People Smuggler’ was recently published by Penguin and has attracted a lot of attention because of the topicality of the subject matter. The book tells the true story of an Iraqi refugee, Ali Al Jenabi, who became a people smuggler to save his family and ultimately came to be seen, not as a heinous criminal the government had hoped, but as the ‘Oskar Schindler of Asia.’
Robin will speak about how, when, why she came to this project, her writing process, and how she worked with Ali all intercepted with readings of a few amusing or engaging sections, then Robin will open up the floow for a Q&A type discussion which is always vigorous. http://stkildarotary.org.au/events/club-meeting-mwr-2-2012-08-28/

The World Health Organisation has declared 25 April as World Malaria Day. In deference to the significance of 25 April in Australia, the National Rotarians Against Malaria Committee decided to recognise World Malaria Day on 30 April. We call it “Malaria Awareness Day”.

Rotary Clubs should start to think about what they might do at that time to recognise the date; invite someone to speak on malaria, get an item in your local newspaper - highlight any donation you may have made to, for example, the Adopt a Village program.

Bee Aware! Projet - Rotary Club of Caulfield

The Rotary Club of Caulfield considered a number of eco-projects for 2012-2013 and concluded that the most dire situation was in relation to losses of the Honey Bee and resultant decimation of agricultural and horticultural industries.

Among several aims, the Project seeks to encourage the establishment of such groups in as many municipalities as possible and that Bee Keepers comply with the 2011 Apiary Code.

Australian Rotary Health - 30 years - Celebration Dinner

Saturday 13th August, 2011

Moonee Valley Racecourse

$65 per person, (includes 3 course meal - drinks at Bar Prices

Australian Rotary Health is Australia's largest non-government funding body for mental illness research. We also fund research in other health related areas.

The genesis of Australian Rotary Health in 1981 was the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The late Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington, established
Australian Rotary Health to support research into SIDS. As Australian Rotary Health grew so did the vision of medical research possibilities. Supported by Rotarians Australia wide,
Australian Rotary Health was soon in a position to sponsor health research in areas that did not readily attract funding.

Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision of health. We are a catalyst for projects that improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves.
