REBUILD EAST TIMOR

Rotary District 9800's support is sponsoring students to undertake vocational education and training.

Despite a history beset by upheaval, the future of the fledgling nation of Timor Leste (East Timor) remains a resilient and optimistic, albeit a yet to-be-determined one.

With the median age of its citizens sitting at just 21.1 years of age, for East Timor to gain stability, economic growth, and a strong place on the international stage, it must look to rebuilding through its youth and its infrastructure.

Rotary District 9800 has been highly involved in supporting both these quests, providing tools, equipment, materials and supplies to provide accommodation and facilities for the civilian population, whilst providing training and education to the nation's youth.

The Xanana Vocational Educational Trust

The Xanana Vocational Educational Trust's mission is to raise funds for distribution to approved organisations or individuals in East Timor for the purpose of developing a vocational education system contributing to productive employment outcomes.

Rotary District 9800's funding and support of the Xanana Vocational Educational Trust's programs has extended from sponsorship of students to sponsorship of the Dili Institute of Technology and the the government vocational school at Becora.

These programs give young people from Timor Leste the opportunity for a real future - In the words of His Excellency, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmäo, President of Timor-Leste:

"[I emphasize the importance of education to young people] when we talk about attracting investment. I tell the young people [if] they are not skilled, when investors come we will only be the cleaners and the security guards."

How Can You Get Involved or Help Out?

Rotary District 9800 members administer a number of sponsorships, donations of goods, and on the ground support efforts in Timore Leste. As the needs of training facilities, youth and the community all change in Timor Leste, so to do our efforts shift to accommodate these needs.

Right now the most pressing need however is sponsorship of students and vocational training institutions such as the Dili Institute of Technology - To make a financial contribution simply email Easttimor@rotarydistrict9800.org and information will be provided to you on how you can make a difference and give East Timorese a fair start in nationhood.
