Why are they doing this? What are they hoping to achieve, both for their community and for themselves? Hear from one such person who has recently made this decision and is now living what he describes as a "life of greater significance", helping such organisations as the Smith Family as a volunteer".

Letters to Members

Brian Reid, Program Director of the Rotary Club of Hawthorn, recently organised a very interesting Rotary meeting. He has been kind enough to share his idea with us.
"We had a Letters Lunch at the Rotary Club of Hawthorn recently and it was a great success. Members read letters from ancestors who came to Australia in the First Fleet, from a New York fireman asking about the rules of Aussie Rules, from a grandfather to his new grandson written in Hitler's bunker on his letterhead, from a 19th century politician giving his funeral instructions, from an early explorer anticipating the mineral deposits that would be discovered one day , from someone who had been sitting in the Pentagon when the crashed airliner stopped just outside his window - the list goes on."

Brian's Three Top Tips:

  • Organisationally - give members plenty of notice, keep promoting it and reminding members and asking them to tell you "who will bring what".
  • The MC should have several letters to fill gaps - but for us they were not needed and we ran out of time.
  • A roving microphone helped keep things moving along, but you will need to find a way to prise it away from the slow ones!
Brian says "Our Letters Lunch was easy to organise, it's still being talked about and will be repeated next year."
