Save Water! Alliance Inc
Since 1997 Melbourne has experienced a 30% drop in average annual catchment rainfall. With a growing population forecast, a continuation of this rainfall shift is unsustainable and will result in a significant change in how we use water at home and in the workplace. So what is the current situation, where do we need to get to, and how do we ensure a sustainable water future

"What's happening to the Yarra River?" Ian Penrose, Riverkeeper

The Yarra was the decisive factor in the siting of Melbourne and it holds a special place in the region's indigenous heritage. Seventy per cent of the city's drinking water comes from the river's upper reaches. The Yarra Valley is one of the region's major wildlife habitats, and contains Australia's largest metropolitan park. In recent months, the state of the Yarra's water quality, its uncertain flows, and pressures from urbanisation have all attracted public attention. Hear about these and other interesting matters concerning the Yarra River, which plays a major role in the health of our natural and urban environments.

Since 2001, Ian Penrose has directed his energies towards environmental matters, and for three years, he headed the Victorian Government's program to restore the Snowy River. Ian's appreciation of rivers led him to start working for a community group called the Yarra Riverkeepers Association. Earlier this year Ian was nominated "Riverkeeper". In this role he operates a small boat on the river's lower reaches, courtesy of a grant from Melbourne Water, and helps spread the word about why the Yarra is special and how we all can play a role in restoring and protecting it.
