Warren Duncan

"Carrying on a great Melbourne tradition – Always There for Melbourne"

“Warren Duncan is a Manager with one of Australia’s oldest established charities, the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation (LMCF). Since 1873, the Foundation has carried on a great Victorian tradition of assisting needy families and people from all manner of backgrounds.

Warren can speak on some challenges facing Melbourne every day. At a time when many Australians are facing a new set of social problems, the LMCF continues to fund contemporary services to help people in need address these issues.

This year on behalf of donors and supporters the Fund will generate the income necessary to allow payment of grants to over 300 charities: small and large, well known and some not so well known.
Focused appeals, corporate partnerships, special fundraisers to assist financially disadvantaged families, establishing charitable trusts in co-operation with local government councils, charity partnerships with major retailers and a leading edge Youth in Philanthropy Program with 10 secondary schools to engage our youth are all examples of how this is done”.

The Kokoda Trail and The Royal Children's Hospital....Simon O'Donoghue's Story

AG Simon O'Donoghue, his son and colleagues recently completed the arduous and infamous 96 klm Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea. The Trail has been described as a place where 'some of the most bloody campaigns of World War II were fought'. It has been estimated that 12,500 Japanese and 2,600 Australians died on the Kokoda Trail in seven months. Mud, rugged mountainous rainforest country, lung-bursting climbing and meetings with the 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels' (the local porters and guides who risked their lives in WWII) were part of Simon's 96 klm trek. His remarkable trek was for a good cause....a neurological ward at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Tibetan Village Project

Don Cullen is closely involved in providing assistance for poorly serviced medical facilities in the Lhasa region of Tibet. A small group of volunteers have set up a couple of medical clinics and are providing a stipend to support the local doctor servicing a population of 1800 in this remote district. Don is working with a group, whose aim is to make life a little easier for Tibetans in rural Tibet. Apart from sponsoring an Orphanage in Lhasa, (the capital) which has 60 children from 2 to 18 years, they also have, over the past few years, managed to supply 2 mobile clinics and set up a medical clinic with a doctor and health care workers in the country, some 150 kilometres from Lhasa. Don’s talk shows the work the volunteer group is doing with photographs and some pieces of art from Tibet.
