SCIENCE SCHOOLS

The Committee will promote sponsorship by Clubs and select students from candidates nominated for two programs:

  • The National Youth Science Forum: this is a prestigious two week Program attended by students who have attended Year 11 and are thinking of pursuing a career in science and technology. The forum is fully residential and is held in Canberra in January each year. An additional forum is now avaliable in Perth, providing the opportunity for our District to nominate an additional 8 students. In the past few years, D9800 has been able to send approximately 16 students.
  • The Siemens Science Experience: this 2-3 day Program is conducted, over the summer months, by participating universities in Melbourne for Year 9 students interested in science. There is no selection process and students only need to obtain endorsement from their local Rotary Club to enrol.

LORD SOMERS AND POWERHOUSE

Clubs can support the following programs by nominating and sponsoring participants or just sponsoring Powerhouse for the conduct of such programs.

1. CAMP DIVERSITY- A weekend action program for young people [16-25] living with intellectual and physical challenges to enjoy excitement and fun times with other people and to share their ideas and experiences.
2. emPOWERme- A program for anyone in year 10. Objective is to develop positive attitudes about the future by providing participants with a feeling of empowerment so they can take the steps to control their future.

There are also other Powerhouse programs Clubs can be involved with by nominating year 11/12 students as Groupers for the annual Lord Somers Camp each year, whereby young men and women from all walks of life come together for a week long Camp at Somers to live, play and work together in a harmonious environment and in so doing develop their interpersonal skills.
